Sophia Popov, who competed five times at the German Girls Open - including two placements in the top 3, writes incredible sports history! As the first German professional golfer, Sophia wins a women's major with the “AIG Women's Open” at the Royal Troon Golf Club, which has already hosted “The Open” for men 9 times.
At the "AIG Women’s Open", one of the most prestigious tournaments in women's golf, the 144 best players in the world from 32 different countries gathered over the weekend. Due to the ongoing global corona pandemic, those with the ANA Inspiration, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the U.S. Women’s Open, three of the five women majors so far postponed to a later date in the year - the “Evian Championship” was even canceled entirely for this year.
With an overall result of -7 and laps of 70, 72, 67 and 68, Sophia experienced the most successful week of her professional career in sport. After a long journey from the USA, Sophia only had one trial lap to prepare for the demanding links course in Royal Troon. Sophia already mastered the first two laps with ease and was able to position herself just behind the front of the field. In the third round, Sophia stayed bogey-free and turned it up with an eagle and two birdies and, with her 67, brought the best round of the tournament into the clubhouse. Starting the tournament as 304th in the world rankings, Sophia, with her impressive performance, barely left the competition a chance to overtake her and went three strokes ahead of the last round. Here Sophia showed strong nerves and finally secured the greatest success of her career so far with a strong round of 68 and a tap-in on hole 18.
